We seek to appoint an enthusiastic Paediatrician with general skills, expertise and the confidence to manage a wide variety of acute and chronic paediatric and neonatal conditions. The post would include the opportunity to develop a special interest to complement the needs of the department. 

You will join a friendly, experienced and supportive team of consultants.

The main responsibilities are:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of the patients referred to you
  • The continuing responsibility of the patients in your charge
  • To supervise and professionally manage junior staff assigned to you
  • To contribute to service planning and delivery of targets

The successful candidate will join an excellent team with opportunities to innovatively develop clinical services and play a key role in the configuration of our new services. The medical teams across all wards and departments aim to provide high quality medical education, delivered in a supportive and friendly environment. NHS Dumfries & Galloway has a strong sense of community as does the population it serves. Relevant experience in General Paediatrics and Neonatology is essential.

The appointee will participate in the consultant on call provision which will normally be 1 in 6.8 nights and weekends. To allow consultants to work within 10 PA contracts the departmental job plans may include days with no allocated activities. The department operates on a 7 week rota system and the appointee will participate in Consultant of the week duties for 2 weeks covering one week for Paediatrics and another week for the Neonatal and with 5 weeks of Clinics/Admin/Speciality work/Clinical Supervisions/teachings etc. The on-call Consultant is responsible for the stabilisation of sick children and neonates prior to retrieval and transfer to intensive care facilities in tertiary units. This may involve the ventilation of premature babies of any gestation within the neonatal unit.

The post holder will be expected to take part in undergraduate and post graduate teaching, guideline setting, clinical governance, patient safety and audit activities. Up to four students from Edinburgh University are attached to the department and we have two Paediatric middle grade trainees from the West of Scotland Deanery. All candidates are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register. The candidate will hold a CCT, be within 6 months of obtaining the certificate, or will be an established Consultant.

You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service and contribute to management. You are expected to follow the Combined Child Health Services policies and procedures on clinical matters and follow the financial instructions and personnel policies and procedures of NHS Dumfries and Galloway. You will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you or know whom to contact.

Dumfries is located in the South West of Scotland, with an excellent reputation for its high standard of local schools, college, and its university. Dumfries and Galloway is a popular tourist resort for many outdoor pursuits including golfing, walking, cycling and mountain biking plus lots lots more! Dumfries is a town which prides itself on its poetry and culture hosting The Big Burns Supper which is held annually in memory of Robert Burns.
